Want to See Some Weird Shit?
William Shatner has a metal band. He played his first show with it Saturday night. I don’t even know what to make of it other than to smile and kind of laugh. Not necessarily laugh at him, but laugh at the situation as a whole.
Shatner, 95, made his live debut with THE *UCKERS on Saturday (September 19) at a Riot Fest aftershow at Park West in Chicago, a warm-up for the main set that closes out Douglass Park tonight. The band reworked songs from his own catalog and previewed material from an upcoming album called “What The F Is Heavy Metal?”, but the covers are what people are going to watch: Ozzy’s “Crazy Train,” Motörhead’s “Ace Of Spades,” and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” The band, for the record, is not a gag. Marcus Nand on guitar and as musical director, Phil Soussan on bass, Britt Lightning of Vixen on guitar, Fred Aching of Kings Of Thrash on drums.

Listen, I am as much a fan of William Shatner as anybody is, and at 95 years old this is impressive beyond belief. One can only hope that we look and sound and move as good as he does at that age. He is standing up in front of a crowd doing the thing.
But this is bizarre. Watch the videos. It is almost as if he is doing spoken word poetry over the band, which, given that Shatner has been talking his way through rock songs since “The Transformed Man” in 1968, is either the entire point or a total accident. I can’t tell. I’m not sure it matters.
That is where I land on it. When you’re 95 years old, you can do whatever the hell you want. If this is what he wants to do, then so be it. Honestly, this could be a really fun time to see with some buddies.
