Weapon K

The name came first. Around 2006, friends watching me play drums in a SoCal melodic death metal band stopped calling me Kyle — first it was “Kyle Thrash,” then just “Weapon K.” Nicknames like that aren’t given. They’re earned behind a kit.

The band played The Whisky and venues up and down Southern California before life did what life does. The kit went quiet. The obsession didn’t.

I’m the founder and lead writer of Weapon K Media. Every album review on this site comes from full, repeated listens — not a press-release skim. Every live review comes from a show I actually stood in the room for, usually somewhere in the LA/OC corridor: The Observatory, House of Blues, 1720, First Street Pool, the rooms the national press doesn’t cover.

What I bring to a review that an algorithm can’t: twenty years in this scene as a player and a fan. I know what a drummer is doing when he’s hiding behind triggers. I know what a 200-cap room feels like when a band is about to break. And I’ll tell you when a record is a disappointment, because access has never paid my bills — this site answers to readers, not labels.

Beat: metal, all subgenres — death, prog, doom, core, and the LA/OC underground.
