Get This One Right
A maze through Ozzy’s entire life could be one of the coolest things Halloween Horror Nights has ever pulled off. It could also be a cheap way for the family to make a buck. I’m honestly undecided which.
After months of rumors, Universal has made it official: “Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness” is coming to Halloween Horror Nights 35, running at Universal Studios Hollywood (Sept 3–Nov 1) and Universal Orlando. The Hollywood house walks fans through Ozzy’s life, beginning near Birmingham, England, then winding through the decades to a soundtrack of “Crazy Train” and album-inspired set pieces: the Osbourne Asylum pulled from Diary of a Madman, the personas shifting from Madman Ozzy to Werewolf Ozzy to the Prince of Darkness himself. The soundtrack pulls from Blizzard of Ozz, Bark at the Moon, No More Tears, Scream, and Ordinary Man.
Metal and horror have always been joined at the hip, so on paper this is a perfect fit. Ozzy is the Prince of Darkness. If anyone in metal has earned a haunted house, it’s him. Universal has walked this road before with Rob Zombie mazes and a handful of other music figures, but rarely from this deep in the metal world. And landing the year Ozzy passed, the whole thing sits on a knife’s edge: get it right and it’s a fitting tribute, phone it in and it’s a merch table with a fog machine.
Here’s the opportunity. There are a lot of songs past “Crazy Train,” “Bark at the Moon,” and Blizzard of Ozz that could live in a house like this. Lean on the deep cuts and this becomes something unique instead of a greatest-hits walkthrough.
I’m undecided on whether I’ll end up going, but the videos will hit the internet either way. Do it right, and it could be really neat. What do you think?
