Good Song. Now Bring the Screams Back.
Spiritbox is back, and “Mourning” is a good one. It is also the most radio friendly song they have put out in a long time, which is going to make some people mad.
The band released the official video tonight, their first new music since Tsunami Sea landed in March of 2025. Alex Bemis and Mike Stringer directed it. No album attached, no EP, no announcement. Just the song.
The contrast with Tsunami Sea is stark. That record was heavy, djenty, modern metalcore with the weight cranked all the way up. “Mourning” goes the other direction entirely. It is melodic, it breathes, and it leans on hooks instead of impact.
The best part is Josh Gilbert. He is all over this thing, not buried behind Courtney LaPlante but sharing the song with her, and it is about time. Anyone who put in real hours with As I Lay Dying already knows what that voice can do across multiple records. Spiritbox finally pushing it to the front is the smartest decision on the track.
Here is what I miss: Courtney’s harsh vocals. They are not here at all. On a song this melodic that is a defensible call, but her screams are a huge part of why this band broke the way it did, and going a full single without them leaves something on the table.
People online are already calling this the start of a new era. Maybe. It could be the front end of an album cycle, it could be an EP, it could be a one off while they figure out what comes next. My guess is this is an opening move and not the whole hand.
