This Is Still Pantera
I don’t care what people say. This is still Pantera, and this is a really, really great lineup.
Pantera has announced The Great NOLA Trendkill, a two-day festival at UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans on November 20 and 21. It’s the band’s first New Orleans show in 30 years, landing on the 30th anniversary of The Great Southern Trendkill. Joining them: Down, Black Label Society, Corrosion of Conformity, Power Trip, Crowbar, Eyehategod, Pig Destroyer, Rāde and Herakleion. It’s presented by Housecore Horror, Housecore Records and Live Nation, and doubles as the return of the Housecore Horror Festival.

Yes, both Abbott brothers are gone. It doesn’t matter. Zakk Wylde is no Dimebag Darrell and nobody is pretending otherwise, but the people sitting these shows out because they’ve decided this isn’t really Pantera are being ridiculous. Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown are both up there. That’s two original members, one more than Megadeth has had for years, and nobody runs this argument on Dave Mustaine. There are dozens of other examples. I got to see them last year at the Forum in Inglewood and they were great. This is a celebration of the Abbott brothers, played by the guys who were actually in the room.
And Charlie Benante is the other reason to go. Anthrax’s drummer has been behind the kit since the reunion started, and the guy is vastly underrated. He really brings the chops to these shows. Filling Vinnie Paul’s seat is not a gig you take lightly, and Benante plays it like he knows exactly what he’s sitting in. He alone is worth seeing here.
The undercard is what really sells the rest of it. Down playing their home city, with the weekend serving as the official record release show for Volume V. Power Trip, who are incredible. Corrosion of Conformity, Black Label Society, Crowbar, Eyehategod. It’s a mixture of the different members of Pantera and their various bands, plus most of New Orleans metal in one building, and Pepper Keenan gets to play two sets of it.
If you’re in New Orleans, check this out. This should be a really, really cool show.
