These Guys Know Exactly Who They Are
Maybe I’ve been sleeping on DevilDriver. “Dead in the Water” dropped this morning, and it slaps — riff heavy and aggressive as all hell. Great way to welcome in a Wednesday.
“Dead in the Water” is the second single from Strike and Kill, DevilDriver’s eleventh studio album, due July 10 via Napalm Records. Lineup: Dez Fafara on vocals, Alex Lee and Gabe Mangold on guitars, Davier Ortega Perez on drums, and returning founding bassist Jon Miller. First single “Dig Your Own Grave” cracked 400,000 cross-platform streams. Not bad.
For as long as DevilDriver has been around, keeping up with the heavy is not something every band does successfully. They know who they are and what they’re good at, and I respect that. One thing I can’t ignore in “Dead in the Water”: a few sequences that are very Dethklok-coded. Tribute or coincidence? Who cares. Take it or leave it — these guys are a giant in the genre for a reason, and this single is proof.
North American tour kicks off August 14 in San Diego with Upon a Burning Body and Ov Sulfur. It wraps September 5 in Anaheim. I’ll be there.
