Here We Go Again
Another founding-era member is reportedly out of Slipknot, and once again nobody in the band is saying anything straight. That’s the part I keep coming back to.
TMZ reported Friday night that Sid Wilson was notified late Friday afternoon he’d been permanently kicked out, citing a source with direct knowledge. Blabbermouth, Loudwire, The PRP and everyone else had it within the hour, all of them pointing back at that same single source. Nobody confirmed it independently.
Then Jim Root posted this: “Don’t believe everything you read. Think. Take a breath. Sit with it for awhile. Maybe. Just maybe even wait until there’s more information.” Read it again, because it’s doing something specific. That is not a denial. Root had every opportunity to say the report was false and he didn’t take it. What he said was closer to “you don’t have the whole picture,” which is a very different sentence. It makes me wonder whether there’s a reason behind this that hasn’t come out yet, and whether the band is sitting on it on purpose. Cryptic is a choice.
The surprising part is the math. If this holds, four members of the nine-man lineup that made the self-titled debut are left: Corey Taylor, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson and Jim Root. Paul Gray died in 2010. Joey Jordison was dismissed in 2013 and died in 2021, and I don’t think anyone ever stopped quietly hoping he’d walk back in before the band cycled through two more drummers.
The unsurprising part is that this is just what Slipknot does now. Chris Fehn in 2019. Craig Jones in 2023. Jay Weinberg the same year, a drummer fans genuinely loved across three records, gone with no real explanation. The band goes quiet, waits it out, and you find out later or never.
Losing Sid would hurt in a specific way. The scratching and the DJ work are a huge part of why the first two records sound like nothing else, and live he was one of the best reasons to watch that stage: the masks, the walkway, that manic energy that never let up. He’s also had a rough year, with his engagement to Kelly Osbourne called off earlier this year.
All of this lands while the band is deep into writing the next record. Wait for someone in Slipknot to say something real. Based on their track record, bring a book.
