The Crossover Bill That Actually Earns It
I didn’t realize we were already seven editions deep into Dia De Los Deftones, but this is pretty cool. An eclectic lineup that has no business working on paper, and somehow Deftones make it look easy.
Deftones just revealed the lineup for the 7th annual Dia De Los Deftones, landing at Petco Park in San Diego on November 7. The bill is all over the map: The Neighbourhood, AFI, Converge, Jehnny Beth, Bktherula, Ladrones and more, spread across two stages. Presale opened this morning at 10 AM PT, with general tickets going on sale this Friday, June 26.
The lineup is eclectic to say the least. Hardcore lifers Converge on the same flyer as The Neighbourhood, plus a handful of rap and experimental acts, should read like a mess. It doesn’t. Deftones are one of the rare heavy bands who can actually pull this off, and it comes down to two things: a catalog that has lived in five genres at once since day one, and the stature to top a festival without anyone questioning whether they belong there.
Compare it to the Knocked Loose and Denzel Curry “Hive Mind” co-headline tour. On paper that’s a similar swing, hardcore meets rap, but that one reads as strange to me, like a stunt pairing. This doesn’t. It feels curated, not forced. Three decades of refusing to pick a lane is exactly what lets Deftones put Bktherula and Converge on the same stage and have it make sense.
And who doesn’t love San Diego? If you’re in the mood for something different and you haven’t caught Deftones in a minute, this is the one to circle.
