Frozen Soul – No Place of Warmth album cover

Gone in 36 Minutes. Worth Every Second.

No warmup, no bullshit — just straight death metal done right. No Place of Warmth is exactly what you want from Frozen Soul: tight songs, deep growls, and drums that feel like the band heard you say you love drums and said, alright — let’s make the drummiest shit you’ve ever heard. The only thing working against it is the runtime, but we’ll get there.

The Fort Worth five-piece have been one of the more reliable names in modern death metal since Crypt of Ice hit in 2021. Their third album doesn’t reinvent the formula, but it sharpens every element that’s worked — and especially the guitars, which sound better here than on either of the first two records.

The title track opens the album with an atmospheric intro that pulls you right into their lair — and then it keeps you there. That opening atmosphere is doing real work: by the time the song fully opens up, you’re already locked in.

“Dreadnought,” featuring Devin Swank of Sanguisugabogg, leans into the deep growls and a rhythm section that hits like a freight train. It’s the kind of song that makes the case for why no-frills death metal still works — not everything needs a modern twist, and this track knows exactly what it is.

“Eyes of Despair” is harder to explain. It’s a ripper — no atmosphere, no tricks, just a song that works. Sometimes that’s all there is to say about it, and honestly that’s enough.

While I liked their first two records, this one really has me sat. The production is sharper, the guitars finally have the presence they deserve, and the atmospherics are deployed with more confidence than ever. At 36 minutes, it goes by in a blink of an eye, and you’ll find yourself back at the title track before you’ve fully absorbed what happened. That’s not a complaint about the quality — it’s an argument for a longer album next time. For now, No Place of Warmth is exactly what straight-up death metal should sound like.

Score: 7.5/10
