The Part Nobody’s Talking About
I’ve written about Mastodon a lot lately, and none of it was planned. They just keep dropping news: the single and tour a couple months back, the tribute to Brent Hinds last week, and now the album everyone knew was coming. Here it is.
Marrow Deep, the band’s ninth full-length, lands August 28 via Loma Vista. It’s their first record since Hinds left the band in March 2025 and died in a motorcycle accident that August. Lead single “Snakes for Dinner” is out now, and it comes with a guest spot from Josh Homme, his first appearance on a Mastodon track since “Colony of Birchmen” back in 2006. Watch the video below.
Here’s the part every other outlet is skipping. Mastodon is a five-piece now. Nick Johnston stepped in on guitar to fill the Hinds slot, and that’s the change everyone reported. But João Nogueira, who’s been touring with them on keys and synth on and off since 2021, is now a full-time member. That’s the first time in the band’s history they’ve been five. For a band that has never once repeated itself, from Leviathan to Crack the Skye to Hushed and Grim, a permanent keyboardist is not a footnote. It’s a new set of tools, and Mastodon has always used every tool they pick up.
So no, I’m not tired of posting about them. This is a band coming out of the worst stretch imaginable and choosing to expand instead of contract. Marrow Deep might be a grief record, a reinvention, or both. I want to hear which.
They’re out this fall on the Poisonous Weapons Tour with Deafheaven and Alcest, hitting the Hollywood Palladium October 10 and San Diego October 11. If you’ve never seen Mastodon live, fix that. They’re one of the best going.
