Ten Albums Late, But I’m Here Now
I’ll be honest: for years I had Cult of Luna filed under “fine.” Songs came through here and there, I shrugged, I moved on. Then I hit play on “In the Shadow of Your Shadow,” and now I feel silly for not getting on top of these guys sooner.
The Swedish post-metal outfit premiered the new single today via an official visualizer — watch it below. It’s the title track of their tenth full-length, In the Shadow of Your Shadow, out November 6 on the band’s own Red Crk label. Pre-orders open June 24 at red-crk.com.
What got me are the vocals — dark and menacing, and that sounds really cool to me. The song structure pumps along with that classic Swedish metal feel, and I’m a big fan of Swedish metal — big fan of Swedish bands, period — so there’s no reason Cult of Luna shouldn’t fit in that category for me. They do now.
There’s also something to a band ten albums deep that’s still converting people. No major label, no gimmick — their own imprint, a single dark enough to flip a guy who’d written them off as background music. That’s not luck. That’s a band that knows exactly what it’s doing.
Pre-orders open June 24. I’ll spend the time between now and November 6 catching up on the back catalog. Check it out.
