Deathcore Before It Had a Name
Whitechapel were doing deathcore before deathcore knew that’s what it was called — and twenty years in, they’re still the heaviest band in the room.
Whitechapel announced their 20th Anniversary Tour today: a Live Nation–presented North American headline run, the biggest of their career, from November 11 in Atlanta through December 18 in Pelham, Tennessee. Chelsea Grin and The Acacia Strain ride the whole route, with deathcore up-and-comers Netherwalker on most dates. Per guitarist Alex Wade, they’re “playing songs from our entire discography, no albums left out.” Presale opens today at 2 PM local; general on-sale is Friday, June 12.
Their past few tours have been massively popular, and this one won’t be any different. Twenty years is the hook, but the setlist is the real draw — a full-catalog run from The Somatic Defilement through last year’s Hymns In Dissonance, the record that debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart and proved a band two decades deep can still go darker and heavier than the kids chasing them.
The support bill is doing work, too. Chelsea Grin and The Acacia Strain aren’t filler — they’re two more bands that helped build this scene — and Netherwalker is the next-gen pick that keeps the package honest.
